Scotland Camping Holidays in April: 5 Free Family Adventures

Bunk Campers - Undiscovered Scotland

Travelling doesn’t mean that we have to spend lots of money. There are several ways to enjoy the best trip on a tight budget. If you are thinking of visiting Scotland this year, holidaying in spring helps keep costs down in comparison to summer rates. Plus, the Scottish Highlands offer a wide range of family activities to do without spending a single penny!

But the big question is… how can we tour around the Highlands whilst being in control of our budget? First, take advantage of the low-cost flights to Edinburgh or Glasgow. Once you are there, you can cut costs down dramatically if travelling with your accommodation, cooking facilities and transport in one. Hire a campervan in Scotland, camp with your family this April and fill your time in the Highlands cheaply with this list of free venues:

1. Enjoy the coastal paradise

You don’t need to cross the Pond to enjoy sandy beaches and turquoise waters. The Highlands host some of the best coastlines in Europe. With nearby campsites to leave your campervan, we recommend a stroll along Camusadarach and Achmelvich (in the north west of the Highlands) or Dornoch Beach on the eastern coast. At night, cook in your camper and dine under some epic skies… There’s no need at all to pay for an expensive restaurant to enjoy the best views ever!

2. Learn about the Highlands’ vibrant culture

Located in the heart of the picturesque Cairngorms National Park, the Highland Folk Museum is one of the best free activities for your open-air adventure. From your campsite, drive your camper to the quaint village of Newtonmore. Visit the exciting museum where you will learn about daily life and working conditions of Highland people from the 1700s to the present day. Meanwhile, this award-winning attraction also offers the chance to explore its natural surroundings, home of unique wildlife.

3. Try some of Scotland’s local specialties

The first Highlands Haggis Festival will be held on 7 April. Attend cookery demonstrations by the hand of the best local chefs, enjoy live music, buy souvenirs in the craft fair, support your children competing in recipe contests… and everything is free of charge! After the event, demonstrate what you’ve learnt and prepare a traditional haggis supper on board your campervan!

4. Tour the famous North Coast 500

The NC500 is the drive that was named one of the best journeys by National Geographic. You will be greeted with hundreds of miles of coastline, spectacular Highland landscapes, castles, caves, and forests, along with museums, and distilleries along the way. Bealach na Ba is the breathtaking portion of the journey that is truly breathtaking, so have your camera ready!

5. Keep fit in Scotland’s most scenic outdoor gym

The West Highland Way is a 154 km path from Milngavie to Fort William. Enjoy an open-air adventure where you will cross natural parks, climb iconic glens, pass through moors and admire tranquil lochs. If looking for a shorter walking route, drive your camper along a 50 km windy road from Glencoe to Fort William. Stop by Glen Nevis, where Braveheart was filmed, and make an epic end to your low-cost Scottish road trip.
