Stand Up Paddleboarding in Cornwall

Paddleboarding in Cornwall

My girlfriend had just received a new paddleboard for her birthday. We had five child-free days to help her celebrate. It was a no brainer – we were heading to Cornwall!

The Bunk Campers London depot is near Heathrow so after we picked up our 4 berth Europa motorhome, we were already west and ready to take the road trip to Cornwall.  This wasn’t my first Motorhome road trip, but it was in this motorhome and I recommend you take time at the branch before setting off to familiarise yourself with the driver’s cabin. Adjust the mirrors and the seat, locate the wipers, indicators and lights and then set up the navigation, and lastly connect your phone to the Bluetooth and programme your favourite radio channel!  By the time we hit the A303, we were settled in with tunes, snacks and a proper girly catch up!

I never get bored of the A303 with its picturesque rolling countryside which joins up with the M5. I secretly hope we are stuck behind a tractor as we pass by Stonehenge, to catch a glimpse of history as we go by.  Or better still, schedule in a stop!

We were on our way to Portscatho to join our paddleboarding group at the Treloan Coastal Campsite. There were looks of envy as we parked up our home for the next few days. This is the way to camp! One is the joy of the first night set up. Making sure the door is facing the best view. Putting the fresh linen on the beds. Hooking up to power and plugging in your devices. Chatting to your new neighbours about the journey, what route you took and the weather forecast. Then settling down with a drink, cheese and crackers…and breathe!

Amanda from SUP in a Bag took us on a magical three days of paddling the stunning coast and rivers of Cornwall. The evenings were spent cooking, snacking from the fridge and tucking our tired bodies into bed each evening with a book. Absolute bliss! Self-contained with our own kitchen, bathroom and beds… we were in heaven.

Portscatho

This idyllic Cornish coastal town is located on the south coast. With little swell, this is the perfect spot for stand-up paddleboarding.  With a sheltered cove, butcher, off licence and pub (Plume of Feathers) it has everything you need for your break.

Treloan Coastal Holidays

They are not kidding when they say coastal! This campsite sits on the top of the peninsula with views over the sea. You can swim or launch your paddleboard right from the campsite. They have animals – pigs, sheep and chickens. Debbie, the owner, rings a bell in the morning and like the pied piper the kids follow her down to the chickens to collect the eggs. (She sometimes has to hide extra eggs so the kids get one each!). The coffee van arrives on the weekends for your morning wake up although it’s only a short walk along the coastal path into Portscatho. There is a narrow road of about 500m to get into the campsite but easily accessible for a motorhome.

Paddle boarding in the sea

Although my friend and I have both paddle boarded before, we chose to join a guided paddleboarding group. I am so pleased we did! Amanda took us to places we wouldn’t have had the confidence to go ourselves (sea caves anyone?!). She knew loads of secret spots and the best times of the day to launch. There was a wonderful group of 8 like-minded people chatting away as we paddled the coastline. We were even lucky enough to have a seal swim around us! But the highlight for me was the sunset paddle along Percuil River. Absolute serenity!

Planning a five-night motorhome holiday? Here are my top tips:

  • Buy your groceries the morning you pick up the campervan and unload straight in to the fridge.
  • Don’t feel like you have to move about – find a fabulous campsite and set up camp.
  • Spend your last night at campsite part way home, and go for a pub meal or get a takeaway so you don’t have to do any cleaning up.
  • Give your pick up branch a call and secure yourself a space for your car (subject to availability).
