Swimmers taking in the view from a lake in Wales

Siobhain Archer, @fiveonhols, writes about why you don’t need to visit Devon, Cornwall or the Lake District to find natural beauty, fabulous camp-sites and family activities –

This Easter we rented a Grande motorhome from Bunk Campers as an upgrade from our regular VW campervan and drove it off-the-beaten-track from beautiful Shropshire to serene Somerset via bucolic mid-Wales. We loved every minute of our UK motorhome road trip! It was such a treat to enjoy the April sunshine, Britain’s most beautiful countryside and a range of wonderful camp-sites from the comfort of our week’s home on wheels.  What’s not to love about rolling hills, noisy sheep, lake swims, peace and quiet? — not to mention bombing about on bikes, campsite cricket, boules, hikes, card games and river dipping?

The pick-up process was slick and smooth (despite all the tiny bags of randomly packed items we’d brought to transfer) and we all immediately loved the upgrade from our camper van. Garry especially enjoyed having a large fridge, the kids loved having a table for the drives and I’ll never complain about camping with an en-suite 🙂

After the pick-up process was complete, we were on our way to the first campsite in England to begin our family holiday.

Luxury Camping in Shropshire

Shropshire, in rural middle England, offers outstanding beauty spanning from the Shropshire Hills to the Shropshire Union Canal and the Shrewsbury Castle. A bounty for campervan holidays, it is rich in historic sites (like the Wroxeter Roman city) and outdoor activities such as cycling, adventure games, canal trips & more.

In a rare organisational flurry, we’d pre-booked a fabulous luxe campsite near Shrewsbury. Love2Stay was immaculate. Even the dogs were all perfectly groomed! It’s a large site with plenty to do, including a natural pool, beach and hot tubs. We were able to pre-book some activities and sessions in the pool, which helped make the most of campsite life; with a good mix of activities (including camp-fire cooking and a family assault course), some regular campsite favourites (French cricket, boules and bikes) as well as plenty of down-time soaking up a little Vitamin D.

A practically perfect site in Powys, Wales

The largest county in Wales, you’ll find rolling green landscapes coated by the glorious mountains of Powys. You can try something different like bog snorkelling or travel underground to the National Showcaves Centre to explore prehistoric creatures & iron ages tools.

Our second site was just a couple of hours over the border and down through mid Wales. This was a perfect van road-trip route. We loved the views from the open road, the nosy, noisy sheep and rolling hills in every direction. We’d visited Fforest Fields Campsite before and it did not disappoint second time around. It’s a gem of site; peaceful, beautifully situated, and with a lovely lake for messing about on — or in! We made the most of the sunshine; paddled the site kayaks and our paddle-board, some of us swam, and all of us explored the hill and woods around this practically perfect site.

A family enjoys a relaxing movie from the comfort of their motorhome hire in England.

Riverside Farm Camping, Somerset

Stunning beaches, green countryside, lakes & more… Somerset has lots of surprises just waiting to be discovered. Here you can explore Cheddar Gorge – Britain’s biggest gorge, visit a UK Safari Park, or take a trip to Brean Leisure Park for fun in the sun.

For our final site, it was another short drive back across the border into Somerset to Wells and Wookey Farm’s rural, riverside charms. Wookey Farm is a delight. The motorhome field’s pitches are all around the edge of field, and each one has what can only be described as a fire-pit bower made up of flowering fruit trees. There’s a pizza oven, goats and kids to visit, a tiny donkey, swings and a lovely stream for intrepid explorers to navigate. Wookey Hole is nearby, but we opted for a quick trip to Wells, an hour’s horse-riding, a mooch around the tie-dye heaven of Glastonbury (as well as a climb to the top of the Tor) and a good dose of campsite and farm time.
