How to choose the right campervan for your road trip in 2024

Selecting the right campervan for you

From small campervans to family-sized motorhomes, there’s a lot to choose from when you begin planning a road trip in the UK and Ireland. It can be a little overwhelming but we’re here to help you make sense of all the options, so you choose the right motorhome or campervan for your holiday.

What size of camper do you need?

Your first priority will be to narrow down your selection based on the number of people travelling with you. If only one or two people are travelling, the number of options you have are vast. If you’re travelling as a family and are looking for a motorhome to sleep 6 people, the choices become easier.

How long do you plan to be ‘on the road’?

Once you’ve narrowed down your motorhome hire options, consider how long your road trip will be. If you’re off on a weekend jaunt, you may be happy to rent a vehicle that has confined space but, if your travel plans have you away for an extended length of time, you might appreciate a little more room and comfort.

Do you need a bathroom on board?

A must for families travelling with kids but perhaps not as important for younger couples happy to rough it a little. If you require a bathroom inside your motorhome, you can rule out any that don’t.

How much onboard storage do you need for bikes and other ‘toys’?

Small campervans are convenient but typically have little room for anything other than its occupants and their personal gear. Are you planning to take bikes or other recreational equipment with you? If so, you need to hire a motorhome which gives you the storage space you need.

Are you happy to make up your bed every night?

Small campervans typically feature sofa sleepers, meaning you will need to make up the bed every night. If you prefer a fixed bed that you can leave made up throughout your holiday, look for motorhome and campers featuring that option.

Are you comfortable driving a large motorhome on narrow roads in the UK and Ireland?

If you’re a resident of the UK or Ireland, this probably won’t be an issue for you. If you’re a visitor used to driving on wide roads, you need to ask yourself that question. Single-track roads are common here and you need to know how to navigate these safely. Visit Scotland has a helpful driving video which covers etiquette when driving these roads.

Is budget or comfort most important consideration?

Larger motorhomes, and campervans with upgraded facilities will likely cost more than basic models. If you are looking for cheap campervan hire in the UK & Ireland, your search for options should include budget camping cars.

Do you need to be able to stand up inside the campervan?

Check the interior height (See below) of each campervan. If you need something you can stand up in, make sure the interior height is sufficient for your own height.

Are the beds large enough for you?

Another consideration for many. Check the bed dimensions which will usually be shown on the hire company’s website. Will you be comfortable with the bed size/sizes?

The bed dimensions are included on all our campervan pages.
