Ireland was designed for surfers. As the wild Atlantic creates swells the size of houses that come crashing into Ireland’s pristine beaches, Big Wave surfers from all over the world are flocking to the Emerald Isle in search of the perfect wave.

When to go surfing in Ireland?

Surf season has officially arrived in Ireland! The season runs from September – May when winter brings swells up to 15 metres high. The winter months may bring with them big waves, but they also bring chilly conditions! Never mind the weather and feel the cool rush of the ocean, just make sure you pack your thick wetsuit!

Best places for surfing in Ireland.

    Portstewart, Northern Ireland

The well developed seaside town on Portrush in Northern Ireland is a popular choice for surfers in the area with swells of up to 18 feet along the East and West strands. Portstewart is also home to some good surf schools for those who need a little guidance. The more advanced surfer can travel a little out of the town and to find isolated beaches with reefs worth braving the weather for.

    County Sligo

The Lonely Planet has named Mullaghmore in County Sligo as one of the Best Spots to Catch a Big Wave, with surfers riding 15m high waves in 2012.  According to Lonely Planet, surfers are “lucky to ride and grateful to survive” Mullaghmore’s wild waves!

    Bundoran, County Donegal

Known as the ‘Ireland’s surf capital’, Bundoran is probably one of the best known places for surfing in Ireland. Beaches such as the Peak, Tullan Strand and Rossnowlagh have something to offer for every level of surfer.

More challenging waves are found at Inishowen, Fanad Head, Dunfanaghy, Bloody Foreland and Dungloe.

  2. Big wave surfer Al Mennie finds surfing Ireland a totally exhilarating experience!

Once the first rush of cold is over, it makes little difference whether you’re in Hawaii or Machrihanish. Ireland has some of the best surf conditions in Europe. For many surfers based in the UK and Ireland, the 5mm neoprene wetsuit has probably been the greatest surfing invention ever created and those wanting surfing holidays in Ireland had better bring one with them.

Bunk Campers - surfing in Ireland - Al Mennie

In a bid to promote Ireland as one of the world’s premier surf sports, we teamed up with Big Wave Surfer, Al Mennie on his quest for the perfect wave.

Mennie, part of the team that surfed the largest wave in history last year in Portugal, has nothing but praise for the surf conditions in Ireland. We provided the world-class surfer with one of our top of the line ‘Ranger’ campervans, to aid him in his ongoing pursuit to surf the worlds’ best waves.

Click here to see an exclusive interview with Al Mennie, where he talks about his record-breaking big wave surf.

Whether you are a beginner or pro like Al, if you are thinking about surfing Ireland we recommend our ‘Roadie’ for budget campervan hire and the ‘Aero’ our luxury 2 person camper.

    Surfing in England

Cornwall is a brilliant spot for surfing in England and is world-famous for the brilliant waves surfers can catch here. One spot is Watergate Bay.

You can’t visit the north coast of Cornwall without trying your hand at surfing, and there aren’t many better locations than Watergate Bay. It’s a beautiful stretch of sand and a great first look at what your week in Cornwall has in store. Perched on the clifftop lies West Country Surf School, offering surfboard and wetsuit hire, along with surf lessons. You can enjoy a quick breakfast at their Hangout Cafe, then head to the beach and wash it down with a mouthful of saltwater…. or not! It depends really on your surfing ability.
